Leave tax to the experts

Helping you understand your numbers, stay tax compliant and grow.

About the firm

Built by someone who has actually run a business.

Powell & Co. was founded by Ryan Powell after years of running businesses himself — some that worked, others that didn't. The firm exists to spare entrepreneurs the penalties, late nights and quiet panic of misunderstood numbers.

Ryan also founded Wonder Cinema, a UK-wide drive-in and outdoor cinema operation, and was profiled by Wales Online as "the man who made £100,000 in 30 days." That operator's lens shapes how the firm advises every client: practical, plainspoken, and obsessive about cashflow.

The work goes beyond compliance. Every engagement starts with the question, "what would actually move this business forward?" — and ends with a plan for both tax and the funding that makes growth possible.

“I know what it's like to not understand the numbers. That's why we explain everything in plain English — before we ever quote a fee.” Ryan Powell · Founder

What we do

Quietly handling the boring bits, so you can run the business.

Limited companies and sole traders alike have to file. We do that, but we also read the numbers carefully enough to spot the savings, the grants, and the next move — before HMRC writes you a letter.

01

Annual accounts & corporation tax.

Limited companies must file accounts and a corporation tax return every year. We handle both, on time, with the maths right the first time.

  • Statutory accountsincluded
  • Corporation tax (CT600)included
  • Companies House filingincluded
  • Director's tax reviewon request
02

Self-employment tax returns.

Sole trader? We file your self-assessment, untangle expenses, and stop you overpaying.

03

Bookkeeping that actually balances.

Monthly reconciliation across your bank, card and software stack. Numbers ready for any decision.

04

VAT returns & submissions.

Quarterly VAT prepared, reviewed, and filed under Making Tax Digital.

05

Payroll, RTI & pensions.

Pay-runs, payslips, P60s, auto-enrolment. One less thing on the last Friday of the month.

06

Companies House filings.

Confirmation statements, director changes, share allotments — quietly, on time, in your name.

07

Forecasts that read like a plan, not a spreadsheet.

12-month cashflow · updated quarterly

Built for the operator. We turn ledger data into the three numbers that actually drive the business: runway, margin, and the next decision worth making.

Grants & funding

Most of our clients leave money on the table.

The UK and Welsh Government quietly run hundreds of grants every year. Our funding desk reads the eligibility small-print, finds what fits, and runs the application end-to-end — at no extra fee for compliance clients.

  1. i. Free funding & grant checker 30-minute call to map every grant your business could realistically win.
  2. ii. Sector research We learn your industry properly — not just the numbers, the buyers and the trends.
  3. iii. Business plans Investor-grade narrative, financials, and the unit economics behind them.
  4. iv. Cashflow projections 12 to 36-month models stress-tested against three scenarios.
  5. v. Competitor research Who you're really up against, what they charge, and where the gap sits.
  6. vi. Application handling Drafts, submissions, follow-ups — we sit on the panel-side of the form.
How we work

Four conversations. Then we do the rest.

We're not the kind of accountancy firm that disappears for ten months and emails you a tax bill in March. The relationship is built around four simple checkpoints — and a phone that actually gets answered between them.

i.

The discovery call.

Thirty minutes, free, no slide deck. We listen, sketch the year, and tell you straight whether we can help — and what the fixed fee would look like.

ii.

The onboarding week.

HMRC authority, a clean ledger setup, and a single shared folder. By Friday you have a calendar of every deadline for the next twelve months.

iii.

The quarterly review.

Once every three months we walk through the numbers together. Cashflow, margin, tax position, funding leads. Plain English, no jargon, no surprises.

iv.

The year-end wrap.

Accounts filed early, corporation tax minimised legally, and a one-pager covering what worked, what didn't, and the three moves worth making next year.

Frequently asked

Answers before you ask.

Common questions about fees, services, switching firms and how we work with founders across Wales and the UK.

Where is Powell & Co. based and who do you work with?

Powell & Co. Accountants is an independent accountancy firm based in Wales, working with limited companies, sole traders and partnerships across Wales and the wider United Kingdom. We work remotely as standard, with in-person meetings available across South Wales by arrangement.

What services does Powell & Co. provide?

Annual accounts and corporation tax returns (CT600), self-assessment for directors and sole traders, bookkeeping, VAT registration and returns, payroll (PAYE), Companies House filings, cashflow forecasts, business plans and Welsh business grant funding support.

How does fixed-fee monthly accounting work?

You pay a flat monthly fee that covers your year-end accounts, statutory tax filings and ongoing support — no hourly billing and no surprise invoices. The fee is agreed up front based on your turnover, transaction volume and complexity, and is reviewed once a year so it stays fair on both sides.

Can you help with Welsh business grants and funding?

Yes. We track Welsh Government business grants, the Development Bank of Wales, Innovate UK and sector-specific schemes. We tell you exactly what you qualify for, prepare the financials the application requires, and write the application alongside you — not for you.

Will you take over from my current accountant?

Yes. We handle the professional clearance request, the transfer of records and any open HMRC correspondence ourselves. Most switchovers take two to three weeks and you usually never need to speak to your previous firm again.

How quickly will I get a reply?

Calls are answered Monday to Friday during working hours. Emails get a response within one working day. Anything HMRC-related with a deadline jumps the queue and is handled the same day.

Is the first call really free?

Yes. The first 30-minute call is free with no commitment. You will leave the call with at least one specific action you can take that week to save tax, improve cashflow or unlock funding — even if you choose not to work with us afterwards.
